CORBETT – Although he downplays his efforts, those who know Corbett resident Gary Law recognize him as someone who has volunteered countless hours to benefit others.
Members of the Columbia River Gorge Kiwanis Club honored Law Tuesday, Jan. 30, with their Everyday Hero Award.
Law, 67, is the first recipient of the quarterly award, designed to recognize individuals who make a difference in their communities.
“We were challenged … to start doing this because there are so many wonderful people in our communities that we just don’t give enough thanks to, and they are everyday people,” said Sylvia Maly, Everyday Hero Committee chairwoman for Columbia River Gorge Kiwanis.
Kiwanis member Karen Schaaf, who worked with Law on the formation of the Springdale School Community Association, nominated him for the award.
Law spent countless hours filling out the necessary forms to certify the association as a non-profit group in order to save the historic Springdale school, which has become a sort of artist’s haven.
“Sometimes when you help you just need an organization to approve the things you do,” Law said. “We were just lucky to get it approved so quickly.”
Law is an active member of the association and has done everything from producing a volunteer newsletter to painting the building.
He also wrote a grant for the association, which brought in extra funds for building repairs.
