Mardi Gras party, auction benefits Mt. Hood students

The Mt. Hood Community College Foundation will hold its annual auction and dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland.

The theme of this event is “Unmask the Potential,” and the presenting sponsor is Weston Dealerships. Proceeds from the auction will benefit student scholarships.

Come enjoy a Mardi Gras party, complete with masks and beads, while bidding on such auction items as a cross-country ski tour; a Persian high tea; trips to Africa, Italy, New Orleans and Orlando; and many more live and silent auction items. The college jazz band will perform.

Reservations are $80 per person, $160 per couple or $800 for a table of 10. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

PAL to host ‘Safe Haven’ for youth during spring break

From Monday, March 23, through Friday, March 27, the Police Activities League of Portland will be hosting “Safe Haven Spring Break 2009” at all its centers in the metro area, including the center at 424 N.E. 172nd Ave.

Spring break hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, with some earlier start times for field trips.

Young people ages 8 to 17 are encouraged to participate in this event, which will include basketball tournaments, sports clinics, art projects, field trips and a closing picnic.

Several sponsors are supporting the camps including the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Police Bureau, Portland Parks and Recreation, Boy Scouts, Sunshine Division, Safeway Foundation, Molalla Weed & Seed, and Greater Gresham Area Prevention Partnership.

PAL is a non-profit agency building partnerships between youth, police and the community through recreational, athletic and educational programs designed to develop and encourage good citizenship and improve the quality of life in the Portland area.

Registration forms are available at the PAL Centers, or PAL’s main office at 449 N.E. Emerson St., Portland.

PAL of Greater Portland Youth Center, 424 N.E. 172nd Ave., accepts new youth members year round. PAL is open 2:30 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended time during school holidays.

Youth membership fees are $50 for the year or $25 for families that qualify for reduced lunch. There is a one-time cost of $5 for spring break only.

Applications sought for ‘High School Business Educator Awards’

Nominations are being accepted for the 2009 “Outstanding High School Business Educator Awards,” presented by the Portland Tribune and the Oregon State University College of Business.

Deadline for completed nominations is Friday, April 3.

Nominees must be a high school business educator (teacher, adviser, or administrator) in Oregon or Clark County, Wash., with at least two years of experience in education.

Each of five award winners will receive a $500 cash prize and recognition at the OSU College of Business 2009 Alumni and Business Partner Awards dinner on Thursday, May 7, at the Governor Hotel in Portland.
