A North Carolina native who calls Portland home now, Sallie Ford and her three-piece band, The Sound Outside, will play Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6-7, at Pickathon.
ADVERTISEMENTS
Pickathon, one of the nation’s premier indie roots musical festivals, is once again offering a diverse lineup of folk, country, blues, bluegrass, rock and other acoustic-flavored sounds.
The 12th annual festival will take place from Friday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 8, on 80 acres at Pendarvis Farm on Mount Scott, and feature more than 40 bands and soloists.
The gigantic jam offers continuous performances on six stages, including the indoor Galaxy Barn, which is open from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for concertgoers 21 and older.
The festival features food and craft vendors as well as beer gardens and several musical workshops taught by the performing artists. Below are three of the featured artists.
Bonnie Prince Billy & The Cairo Gang
“My wife turned crazy on me one day, started chopping up the bed,” Billy sings in “The Sounds Are Always Begging.” If that’s not enough to intrigue you, consider the fact this baritone-throated country folkie has recorded with Johnny Cash, sung with Marianne Faithful and single-handedly rescued a bankrupt folk fest in England simply by showing up and playing.
• 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, on The Woods Stage; 8:45 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, on the Mount View Stage.
These United States
Combining the swampy exuberance of Little Feat, The Band and other Americana forbears, These United States combines rock ‘n’ roll attitude with competent folk and country explorations. One of the indie roots scene’s best and most accessible bands, they’ve got mass appeal but don’t insult your intelligence lyrically.
