Police arrested a woman on a warrant after a bullet was fired through the floor of her apartment and into the unit below.

Officers responded to a noon report of a bullet fired through a wall at an apartment in the 2600 block of Southeast 174th Avenue, one block south of Division Street, said Portland police Sgt. Greg Stewart.

Upon arrival, they noted that the bullet in the first-story unit came through the ceiling and was fired from the unit upstairs. The residents in the first-story unit were not injured.

Officers tried to get the attention of the person in the second-floor unit, but there was no response. So they entered the apartment and inside found a woman identified as Catrina Cardenas, 22.

She was the only one in the apartment, but it isn’t clear whether others were there when the bullet was fired, Stewart said. The woman also wasn’t very talkative, likely due to outstanding warrants for her arrest for not appearing in Clackamas County Court on an unspecified offense, Stewart said.

So as of yet, there’s no explanation for how the bullet ended up in the downstairs unit, “but it has all the hallmarks of an accidental discharge,” Stewart said.

Police arrested the woman on the warrant. She has since been released. The case remains under investigation.
