Obama rally expected to be a full house

Portland’s Memorial Coliseum will host morning event; evening gathering set in Eugene

(news photo)

Jim CLARK / TRIBUNE PHOTO

Obama supporters lined up around the block on March 19 outside a vacated storefront on Southeast Division Street to get tickets to attend the Presidential candidate's rally at Memorial Coliseum Friday.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Tickets were snapped up quickly for Friday morning’s Portland rally by Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama.

Obama will speak at the Memorial Coliseum as the first event in a two-day swing through the state. Friday evening, he will be part of a second rally at McArthur Court on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.

Another rally is planned at 1 p.m. in Salem.

Obama is in a tight race with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. Oregon’s 65 Democratic delegates will be chosen during the May 20 presidential primary election.

Friday’s rally in Portland is at 9:30 a.m. at the coliseum, 500 North Winning Way. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.

Free tickets for the event attracted a crowd Wednesday afternoon outside the Obama for America headquarters, 3016 S.E. Division St. People lined up around the building to get the tickets, which were gone before evening.

Please oh please Bob and Justin, please tell me you are NOT from Oregon. Not only are your attitudes repugnant, neither of you have appear to have the ability to compose even a basic sentence in English. But then again, I don't run across very many hatemongers that really care very much about education. I'd even wager there are actual sheep farmers in Africa that have a better working knowledge of English than either of you. But you have figured out how to use a computer, so I will give you credit for that, good job boys!

Almost forgot - Obama 08!!!!!! - I am very excited about this visit.

Re: Obama plans two Oregon rallies Friday

Hey Tiffany,

Don't go assuming that Bob is from Gresham! I live in Gresham and believe it or not, there are a lot of Progressive Democrats living out here.

I lived in dowtown and close-in SE Portland for 10 years and I've lived in East Multnomah County Gresham for 8 years, so unlike many people, I actually can speak from experience here.

I am so tired of fighting the misconceptions from people in both Portland and Gresham. Not all Portland residents are elitist snobs who only care about Portland. And not all Gresham residents are uneducated yahoos.

Bob may be from Gresham----or Portland, Tigard, Beaverton, Oregon City, or Pendleton. It doesn't matter because no matter where he lives, he does not speak for the majority. As my parents said, if you can't educate the ignorant (and Bob shows no signs of wanting to be educated) then you should ignore them.

But don't automatically dump Bob in Gresham. And hey, come out to Gresham and visit sometime. We have a nice little city here with a fun, friendly downtown area. I'll treat you to pizza at Wall Street Pizza or we can go across the street and eat some italian at Bocelli's and you can attend an East Suburban Democrats meeting while you're here.

I have always been colorblind regarding race. After listening to Obamas black supremist pastor that he CHOSE to visit every week for 20 years, he has lost my vote.

To hear the pastor screaming and yelling his ANTI-WHITE

hate talk, and watching the audience clap and cheer him on, is way beyond sickening. As long as people like that pastor keep doing those things, racism will never die!

Please note that conservatives, unlike you and your liberal friends believe that Obama has a right to free speech. I would like to quote Michelle Malkin from the Rasmussen Reports, "Barack Obama -- the self-anointed soul-fixing, nation-healing political Messiah -- has lost his glow. That is the take away from the beleaguered Democratic presidential candidate's "major" speech in Philadelphia yesterday. For all of his supposedly unique and transcendent understanding of race in America, Obama's talk amounted to the same old, same old. The Glowbama mystique has gone the way of the Emperor's clothes. Instead of accountability, we got excuses. Instead of disavowal of demagoguery, we got whacked with the moral equivalence card. Instead of rejecting the Blame America mantra of left-wing nationalism, we got more blame whitey. Same old, same old." See the well written article at www.rasmussenreports.com/public......

Can we afford to lose the General election by sticking with a man who has proven his judgement is extremely poor. I realize young people can relate to this young man but he truly is not the one we need to 'transcend' race in America. This man has none of the integrity of MLK. He has his feet cemented into some of the most controversial issues of the times and when he runs against the GOP in November he will sink. How can you as young people say you support Jewish brothers and vote for him? How can you do that? He sat through 20 years of ranting and chose to stay there. Use your instincts here, they Damned America.

If America is going to survive it's adolesence it MUST address racism. There is no use in denying the fact that racism permeates American culture. White American culture has made significant steps forward in examining it's role - it's time for black America to do the same, as well as hispanic America.

White bashing may be convenient, however it is counter-productive and intellectually dishonest.

Corporate Amerika loves this reactive, emotional argument and the tools who keep it going. They are unpaid shills distract the PEOPLE of America, keep them divided, and thus, impotent.

If one looks to history and the failure of past civilizations, one of the major factors was failure to control the slaves(workers). Make no mistake-economic slavery is upon us. We only have to look to our own declining participation in the election and voting process to see one symptom. Others include, lack of personal savings, declining dollar value, less disposable income, and tax, tax, tax!

We can choose to do nothing and decend into abject socialism - become the next USSR (united states socialist republic) - or we can Grow Up - move forward - quit the schoolyard name calling and focus on electing LEADERS - not soundbytes.

Re: Obama plans two Oregon rallies Friday

I am just looking for the day when a politician on either side of the fence will actually have something to say about themselves instead of how much the other guy sucks. Being over 40 I have watched our political process and politicians fall further and further down into the muck. None of them care anything about the american people and their lives - we are just votes to them and they will say anything that will get their party into power. We've forgotten the purpose of the multiple party system. It was put in place to facilitate dialogue and to represent the differing views of our population - not to facilitate hate mongering. All of you out there who hate the other guy because he disagrees with your "perfect vision" are only perpetuating the racism, homophobism, and whatever other "isms" out there that are holding us back from being an enlightened nation. Stop listening to the sound bites your favorite politician is spewing on a daily basis and try listening to the other guy with the different view - you won't catch anything and you might just learn something.

While I find the comments deplorable, you can't just approve the comments you agree with. If you truly believe in free speech, that means you have to tolerate speech disagree with.

That's the problem with the left, they claim to be champions of free speech, but try to censor everything they disagree with.

It's not about disagreeing with comments.

I disagree with at least half of the comments in this thread but I am not calling for their removal.

I'm asking the Tribune why they do not categorize racist comments as "other objectionable content," as stated in their existing commenting policy, which reads as follows:

>>Comments judged to be inappropriate for publication due to personal attacks, unsubstantiated allegations of criminal activity, libel or other objectionable content will be removed.<<

If you want change vote for Obama. Or just sit there and complain about the world until you die. Obama is not muslin. You can vote for Hillary and play this back and forth thing ,Bush ,Clinton,Bush. What are some people afraid of? This is the ice breaker, lets put this madness of race to sleep. All I am saying if you want change vote for Obama otherwise shut up and quit complaining. We are about to get hit hard by the recession and it is going to last for at least four years. I see where people are burning down their homes because they don't want the banks to get them well if there is no change you only have you to blame. What are you afraid of? Church and State? I am a little baffled.

That Wright guy is no longer preaching. Obama is your man. I am loving every minute of this because I want to see if the human race is worth saving. Name calling is a sign of fear check yourselves. The way things are going you may not even be here a year from now. This means all of us. Tomorrow is not promised to no one. Why are the big wigs if you will are moving to Dubai?
