Economic summit focusing on arts, business

The Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce’s East County Economic Summit, now in its ninth year, will be held from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Persimmon Country Club, 500 S.E. Butler Road.

The event’s theme, “The Arts are Good for Business,” is supported by the keynote speakers, which include Tony-nominated character actor Frankie Faison, Roscoe Orman, best known as “Gordon” on the Sesame Street children’s program, and Marc Acito, who gained acclaim through his debut novel, “How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship and Musical Theater.”

A panel of experts discussing arts as an economic engine will include Lanie McMullen, director of economic development for Everett, Wash., Christine D’Arcy, Oregon Arts Commission executive director, and Rip Caswell, owner of Caswell Gallery in Troutdale, among others.

Henningsen unveiling new storage center

Henningsen Cold Storage Co. will hold a grand opening event for its Northwest cold storage distribution center at 19450 N.E. San Rafael St. at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 15. Lunch and beverages will be served and tours will be given.

The Hillsboro-based company built its 144,000-square-foot facility on two adjoining vacant parcels. The facility will complement, rather than replace, the existing 32-employee facility that opened in 1996, company officials said.

Located within the Rockwood-West Gresham Urban Renewal Area, the 14.5-acre expansion site qualifies for a $100,000 New Industries grant. The Gresham Redevelopment Commission issues grant funding as an incentive to capital investments and job creation within its urban renewal zone.

To RSVP by Wednesday, Oct. 8, call Bill Daniel at 503-531-5415 or e-mail at billdaniel@henningsen.com.

Local businesses recognized for sustainability

The city of Gresham has certified local businesses Gresham Ford, Rose City Breast Care, and Dr. Robert Jones, D.D.S, as GREAT Businesses.

The Great Resource Efficiency Assistance to Business certification recognizes businesses each quarter that have met criteria toward creating a sustainable workplace.

Coordinated through the city’s Recycling and Solid Waste division, the GREAT program partners with local businesses to help them improve their operations by conserving natural resources and protecting the local environment while keeping an eye on the bottom line.

Hearing aid center observes awareness month

In response to this growing number of Americans suffering from hearing loss, the American Academy of Audiology in conjunction with Audiology & Hearing Aid Center of Gresham, 752 N.E. Burnside Street, have launched National Audiology Awareness Month in October.

Although most hearing loss that is caused by nerve damage is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and hearing rehabilitation.

For more information or to schedule an interview, contact Sheri Smith at Audiology & Hearing Aid Center, 503-669-7061.
