Marie Bettendorf, a cashier at Food 4 Less at 2444 E. Powell Blvd., checks out one of the store's last customers on Friday afternoon, Oct. 31. The store closed its doors at 5 p.m. and doesn't plan to reopen in the Gresham area. Several of the store's 41 employees were transfered to the Portland location at 7979 S.E. Powell Blvd. Bettendorf says she's filling out applications wherever she can.
ADVERTISEMENTS
Food 4 Less at 2444 E. Powell Blvd. closed permanently at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. The independently owned store under the Kroger Co. umbrella operated in Gresham for 14 years.
Management decided to close the store on Oct. 12, and informed its 41 employees the next day, Manager Shirley Christian said. Some employees are being transferred to the Portland store at 7979 S.E. Powell Blvd., where the Gresham store’s inventory is also moving.
Management is helping other employees find other employment, Christian said.
“We’ve all worked together a long time,” she said. “It’s one of those things that’s really tough.”
wow! The last time i was in that place it was actually nice, for the most part...they did a complete remodel/move around and it looked good!

Unfortunately the poster who blamed the closing of the store on shoplifters is correct. While I have no idea whether they were all illegal immigrants, the majority did fit the general description used to indentify them as such.
It is unfortunate, I also worked at the Fred Meyer in Rockwood that closed for the same reasons. Its sad that I keep losing jobs due to the actions of others.

Anyone else find it odd that Krogers (the parent company) would put a FOOD 4 LESS across the street from another one of their stores... Fred Meyer?
Sad...

There is a lot of confusion about Krogers owning Food-4-Less. They do not own Food-4-Less. Krogers does own the Ralph's/Food-4-Less franchise you see in Southern California and other states but all the Food-4-less stores in Oregon are independantly owned franchises and have never been associated with Fred Meyer since Krogers bought the Fred Meyer chain several years ago. The Food-4Less store in Gresham was built in 1989 or 1990 way before Fred Meyer was ever owned under the Kroger umbrella. None of the Food-4-Less stores in Oregon have ever been owned by the Kroger group umbrella as the article states. It's because it's independantly owned that it probably had to close. Obviously stores owned by Krogers are doing quite well.

Re: Food for Less closes Gresham store
I'm going to miss it. Seems to me that it has been open longer then 14 years.
