Edith M. Barnum

Sept. 8, 1925-Feb. 22, 2009

Former Gresham resident Edith M. Barnum, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 22, at her home in Milwaukie.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 2, at Bateman Carroll.

Edith was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyo., to Arthur T. and Edith Coriene (Leach) Rykken. She spent her early years in Montana until the family moved to Oregon in 1937. She attended Gresham High School.

On May 17, 1945, she married Willis Barnum in Portland.

Edith worked for an insurance claims office in Portland. She later worked as a waitress at Chalet L’Abbe and for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission in Milwaukie. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1998.

Survivors include her son, Gary Barnum of Milwaukie; daughter, Judy Vasile of Milwaukie; brothers, Lawrence Rykken of Boring and Robert Rykken of Boring; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


Jeanrita “Jean” McAfee

July 19, 1931-Feb. 24, 2009

The Rev. Deacon Jeanrita “Jean” McAfee, a longtime Gresham resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, at age 77.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 17405 N.E. Glisan St., Portland. Interment will follow at the Josefa May Memorial Garden at the church.

Jean was born July 19, 1931, in South Bend, Ind.

She married Schuyler S. Hinman, who preceded her in death in 1983. In 1993, she married James O. McAfee. He preceded her in death in 2007.

Jean was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1993 and served in the Eastern Diocese and the Oregon Diocese. She served as the deacon of St. Aidan’s Church for the past four years and as the deacon at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church from 1995 to 2004. She also worked for the Stadelman Fruit and Ice Company in The Dalles for 10 years.

Jean was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, reading, traveling and going shopping. She had a passion for pastoral care and helping other people. She will be remembered for her zest for life and for her love of her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Julie Wood of Gresham and Laura Farrell of Portland; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations can be made to the St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, 17405 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, 97230.

Mildred L. Jablonski

Feb. 17, 1920-Feb. 24, 2009

Gresham resident Mildred L. Jablonski, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 24.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Henry Catholic Church, 346 N.W. First St. Private interment will be at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard.

Mildred was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Spring Hill, W.Va., to Charles and Minnie (Long) Cobb. The family moved to a farm in the Winchester and Nitro area, and Mildred attended school in Buffalo, W.Va.

On Aug. 7, 1937, she married Bruno J. Jablonski at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Charleston, W.Va. In 1953, they moved to Pensacola, Fla., and later resided in Cleveland, Ohio, and Houston. Mildred moved to the Portland area in 1994 and to Gresham in 2006.
