Skate World is usually abuzz with activity, but the opportunity to audition for an upcoming Harrison Ford movie ratcheted up the excitement on a recent Wednesday evening just a tad.
Representatives from Extras Only, a Portland-based casting company, were on hand at the Gresham roller rink to find skaters of all ages who stand out from the crowd. Some of those who showed interest may be chosen to skate or hang out in the background for a child’s birthday party scene in the “Untitled Crowley Project,” which is scheduled for filming in June.
Directed by Tom Vaughan and starring luminaries Brendan Fraser, Keri Russell and “Indiana Jones” Ford, “Crowley” is described as an “uplifting, inspirational drama” inspired by the true story of John Crowley. A successful corporate marketer, Crowley, played by Fraser, walks away from his career to pursue a cure for his children’s life-threatening disease.
Danny Stoltz, owner of Extras Only, said he and his crew have been checking out rinks around Portland and Los Angeles to find 150 folks with the right cinematic stuff. His company helped cast extras for the mega-hit “Twilight,” which was partially filmed at the View Point Inn in Corbett.
Looks and fancy skating are part of finding the right fit, Stoltz notes, but personality is no small factor.
“It’s a long day” on the set, he says. “We look for people who will be easy to work with. You’re going to work, so we have to make sure you’re not asking for (the actors’) autographs. You can’t look into the camera – those kinds of things.”
