William “Bill” Arnet Fallis
June 9, 1945-Oct. 12, 2009
Gresham resident William “Bill” Arnet Fallis, 64, died Monday, Oct. 12, at his home from heart failure.
A wake will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at St. Henry Catholic Church, 346 N.W. First St., followed by the burial of cremated remains at 1 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.
Bill was born June 9, 1945, in San Francisco to Arnet and Ila (Holliday) Fallis. He grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from Cupertino High School in 1963. He served three years in the Army and then graduated from San Jose State University in 1971 with his bachelor’s degree in business.
In 1968, he married Melanie Hulburt, whom he met at college.
Bill spent 36 years working for IBM, starting in security and then moving into computer programming before being promoted to management. Bill and Melanie raised their family in San Jose and then in Gilroy, Calif., where Bill was active in the local youth soccer and IBM softball leagues.
In later years, Bill and Melanie worked and lived in the United Kingdom, vacationed regularly in Hawaii and traveled the world. Bill maintained a lifelong passion for the San Francisco Giants and the 49ers. He loved to play billiards and golf, and he was an avid motorcyclist and the neighborhood go-to guy. He read at least a book a week all his adult life, and he never stopped being fascinated by human history.
As a child, Bill joined the Catholic Church. Although his participation waxed and waned over the years, he maintained a firm belief in God and gratitude for his life’s blessings.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Timothy Fallis of Philadelphia and Kevin Fallis of San Diego; daughter, Jennifer of Beaverton; and four grandsons.

Charles R. Zulauf
Feb. 20, 1922-Oct. 29, 2009
Charles R. Zulauf, a resident of Boring, died Thursday, Oct. 29. He was 87.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Charles was born Feb. 20, 1922, in New Jersey to Charles and Mabel (MacDonald) Zulauf. He graduated from Kearny High School in New Jersey and served in the Army. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon.
On June 15, 1946, he married Alice Anthony in Maplewood, N.J. She preceded him in death on 1976.
Charles worked for the state of Oregon. He belonged to several organizations including the Oregon City Elks and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed working on his farm.
Survivors include his son, Charles E. Zulauf of Eagle Creek; daughter, Karen Honeywell of Portland; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mark Alexander Fechtner Jr.
May 19, 1980-Oct. 22, 2009
Gresham resident Mark Alexander Fechtner Jr., 29, died Thursday, Oct. 22, after a battle with a brain tumor.
A viewing will be held from 9 to 11:45 a.m., followed by a funeral service at noon Monday, Nov. 2, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave.
Mark was born May 19, 1980, in Portland to Mark Fechtner Jr. and Kim Teague. He graduated from David Douglas High School in 1998 and attended the College of the Redwoods in California, where he played football.
Mark worked as a florist for his aunt Sheryl at Classic Touch Flowers. His love of music and dancing brought him to start PI Productions, where he would produce beats. He was a big Oregon Ducks fan, and he enjoyed basketball and football. He was known for being very well dressed and a bit of a shoe fanatic.
Survivors include his fiancée, Monique Salmon of Gresham; daughter, Josalyn Fechtner of Gresham; mother, Kim Teague of Portland; father, Mark Fechtner Sr. of Portland; stepdaughters, Jada Salmon, Jordan Salmon and Stephanie Salmon, all of Gresham; stepsons, Steven Salmon and Sydney Salmon of Gresham; sisters, Rochael Fechtner of Portland, Charli Britton of Portland and Marissa Fechtner of Portland; grandmothers, Barbara Teague of Portland and Busha Cheryl Chimenti of Rockaway Beach; and grandfather, Robert Fechtner of Canada.

George Roderick Morton
Nov. 11, 1923-Oct. 25, 2009
East County resident George Roderick Morton, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 25.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Rockwood United Methodist Church, 17805 S.E. Stark St. There will be a private interment.
George was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Hemingford, Neb., to George W. and Minnie Arlene (Blanchard) Morton. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1939 and went on to Chadron State Teacher’s College in Chadron, Neb. He joined the Marines in March 1943 and served in the battle of Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan. He also served in Tientsin, China, by guarding the railroad between Tientsin and Peking. After his discharge, George attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated cum laude in 1949 with his degree in civil engineering.
On Dec. 18, 1948, he married Betty Jean Stewart. She preceded him in death. George married Pat Idlewine on Aug. 22, 1987.
George was vice president of engineering for Cascade Construction Co. in Portland. He served on many committees and received numerous awards.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; sons, Dan Morton of Milwaukie and Dave Morton of Houston, Texas; brothers, Richard Morton of Fort Worth, Texas, Bill Morton of Woodbury, Minn., and Roger Morton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters, Jackie Maus of Colorado and Janice Parkinson of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Darlene Leona Bay

Gresham resident Darlene Leona Bay, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 21.
A funeral Eucharist will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 17405 N.E. Glisan St.
Darlene was born Nov. 16, 1927, in McCook, Neb., to Fred and Anna (Hoffman) Klein. She was raised in Nebraska and moved to Portland at age 15. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1945.
Darlene worked as a supervisor for Pacific Northwest Bell. She met Floyd Bay, who worked as an engineer for the company, and they were married on Jan. 9, 1960, in Portland.
