Former police chief in running for U.S. marshal position

ADVERTISEMENTS

Former Gresham Police Chief Carla Piluso is one of four finalists for the position of U.S. marshal for the state of Oregon.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., forwarded her name and those of the other three finalists to President Barack Obama on Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to a press release from his office.

The 13-member selection committee appointed by Wyden and Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., recommended the finalists to Wyden after interviewing candidates and deliberating over the weekend.

Finalists are Lane County Sheriff Russell Burger, Portland Police Bureau Commander James Ferraris, former Oregon State Police Capt. Gerald Gregg and Piluso.

The selection committee started with six candidates and was supposed to recommend three individuals for the position. But there was a tie for third. As a result, Wyden forwarded all four names to the White House for consideration.

The selection committee also named three finalists for the state’s U.S. Attorney position. They are Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis, Oregon Department of Justice Attorney Amanda Marshall and acting U.S. Attorney Kent Robinson.

Led by Deschutes County District Attorney Mike Dugan, the selection committee was composed of a group of police, sheriff, district attorney, defense attorney, victim’s rights and judicial representatives from each region of the state.

The White House and Justice Department will now review the recommendations, and after further consultation with Wyden, President Obama will make a selection for each position. The U.S. Senate must confirm the nominees once the president makes his nominations for each position.

Remember how she became Chief? All her social working non-profit pals flooded the city managers office with phone calls of support. Obama needs to put extra telephone operators on duty until the selection process is over. She will do a good job as long as it doesn't have anything to do with police work.

I seriously doubt....

if she could *run* anywhere.

...how ironic, when during her entire career Piluso never had a good word to say about any "Fed" interagency effort. In fact, as Chief, her first act of "cooperation" was to withdraw Gresham's participant in a federal task force.

Carla Piluso is the best person for the US Marshal position. Her work history with the City of Gresham and the Police Department speaks volumes. She engages the community and has always had an excellent rapport with her staff and subordinates. She is know for her open door policy and fairness regarding promotions, assignments and training.

I'd like to see any reasons that she should not be chosen for this position.

Yeah, I thought so.

Pedo-

No on both counts of excellent rapport. As a friend of many current and former Gresham Cops, I know that all of them (my friends) were glad to see her leave and love the way the current Chief has shored up the department. As for one of my friends, he was fired when a supervisor asked him to do something illegal and he didn't. Sends a great message to our police recruits.

Ted,

Well I've heard the opposite from many past and present Officers, predominately Administrative staff. I sure there are a number of perpetual whiners in every group that are dissatisfied when they don't get their way.

As far as your accusation that an Officer was fired for not doing something illegal that just doesn't hold water. I'm sure that even if this was true, the Officer could be reinstated if the firing was challenged by the police union or BOLI.

I still see no valid reasons Chief Piluso should not be awarded this position.

Pedo: I agree with you that "Ted" has been misinformed by a fired employee who is making a lame excuse for his termination. If that were true (being fired for not performing an illegal act), that employee would be quite wealthy today as a result of the lawsuit they would have filed and won. Also, since the position of US Marshal for Oregon is a figurehead and political position, I think Carla would do quite well. Having worked with her for many years, she certainly has weak points as do we all, ie; she is known for holding a grudge for years and "getting even" with those she doesn't like, taking credit for others good work and blaming others for her mistakes. Even so, I liked her very much and wish her well. The current Chief is receiving high marks at this time however he's still on his "honeymoon". As with all Chiefs, he will get his fair share of detractors comments in the months to come. It comes with the position.
