Betty I. Hammons

June 26, 1929-Nov. 3, 2009

Gresham resident Betty I. Hammons, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 3.

A funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 6, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland. Interment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Betty was born June 26, 1929, in Mitchell, Neb., to Floyd and Lydia Lomax. She was raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, Nyssa, and in Parma, Idaho. She graduated from high school in Parma in 1947.

On Nov. 27, 1947, she married Lloyd Junior Hammons.

Betty worked for Minit Mart and was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing bunco with friends.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Dennis D. Hammons of Redmond, Wash., and Jeffrey J. Hammons of Gresham; daughter, Kelly K. Mohr of Gresham; brother, Kenneth Lomax of Seattle; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


Richard Max Peck

July 12, 1919-Nov. 10, 2009

Gresham resident Richard Max Peck, 90, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, surrounded by family.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at First Baptist Church, 909 S.W. 11th Ave., Portland. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Max was born July 12, 1919, in Carl Junction, Mo., to Frank and Malburn Peck. When he was 5 years old, the family moved to Oregon and settled in Southeast Portland. Max graduated from Franklin High School and studied pre-medicine at Oregon State College. Max then spent several years in medical school in Portland before he was drafted into the Army Air Force in 1943 during World War II. He served at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, where he worked in the aeromedical research laboratory, testing and developing anti-gravity suits and operating the human centrifuge machine.

On Oct. 15, 1943, he married Margaret Morgan. They moved to Paris, Texas, and Max served the remainder of his military service as a pharmacy technician.

After receiving his doctorate in optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Max started his own optometry practice in Portland, where he and Margaret worked until retirement in 1985.

Max had a passion for music and was a prominent figure in the First Baptist Church choir, where he and Margaret were active members since 1949. Max also sang in the Portland Symphonic Choir during the 1950s.
