Earl David Lesperance
July 18, 1929-Nov. 16, 2009
Gresham resident Earl David Lesperance, 80, died Monday, Nov. 16, at his home.
A visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Bateman Carroll. Private burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Earl was born July 18, 1929, in El Reno, Okla., to Earl and Dema Mary (Greer) Lesperance. He married Colleen Young in 1949 and they moved to Gresham in 1952.
Earl worked in construction, and he was a member of Local 320 of the Laborers Union for 52 years. Earl enjoyed working on cars and he loved being outside. He had a wonderful garden and people would always stop by to get some vegetables. He was always willing to help other people.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen; and by his son, Richard Lesperance.
Survivors include his son, Ron Lesperance of Boring; brothers, Bob Hertzell of New Plymouth, Idaho, and Gene Hertzell of Salem; sister, Thelma Hertzell of Redmond; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Duane Wright Hart
Oct. 5, 1934-Nov. 16, 2009
Former East County resident Duane Wright Hart, 75, died Monday, Nov. 16, in Milwaukie.
Visitation hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Bateman Carroll. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Duane was born Oct. 5, 1934, in Lake Town, Utah, to Parley and Florence (Hemmert) Hart. Duane graduated from Ogden High School and received his associate degree from Weber State College in Ogden, Utah.
On Dec. 21, 1955, he married Shanna Collard. They moved to Oregon in their early 20s and settled in Rockwood, where they raised their two sons.
Duane worked as an accountant for Willamette Industries for 40 years, retiring in 1996. Duane and Shanna moved to Milwaukie in 2004.
Duane’s first priority was his family. He enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sporting events and activities. He also enjoyed golf, gardening and movies, and he was a huge Portland Trail Blazers fan. He played softball for a men’s league and was part of the Railroader’s Bowling League. He hosted and participated in poker parties once a month for 40 years. Duane was also a snowbird and spent the past 10 winters in Winterhaven, Calif. Duane was known for his sense of humor, and he loved a good joke and to laugh.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Hart; and by his sister, Florine.
Survivors include his wife; son, Kevin Hart of Oak Grove; brothers, Shirl Hart of Utah and Carlos Hart of Washington; and four grandsons.

Milton RodgerVan Zanten
April 26, 1920-Nov. 16, 2009
Troutdale resident Milton Rodger Van Zanten, 89, died Monday, Nov. 16.
A visitation will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Good Shepherd Community Church, 28298 S.E. Haley Road, Boring. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Rodger was born April 26, 1920, in Boyden, Iowa, to William and Fa’ie (Craycraft) Van Zanten. He was raised and educated in Iowa. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served for four years.
On March 15, 1939, Rodger married Ethel DeVries. Rodger joined the Army in 1944 and served in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Rodger and his family moved from Minnesota to Salem in February 1947 and later to Troutdale in 1982. Rodger worked as a homebuilder, journalist and in public relations until his retirement in 1998.
Rodger was politically active and ran in 1974 as a write-in candidate for governor against Robert Straub. Rodger loved writing about current events and politics and was a frequent contributor to The Outlook’s letters to the editor section.
Rodger was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, the 87th Infantry Division Association, the Northwest Chapter Veterans, Good Shepherd Community Church and the Republican National Committee.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Snodgrass on Nov. 2, 1976; by two brothers; and by one sister.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Jane Jacobsson of Salem; sons, Rodger Douglas Van Zanten of West Linn and Dyrk Van Zanten of Gresham; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Good Shepherd Community Church building fund, 28986 S.E. Haley Road, Boring, 97009.

Edith Erene Dodson
May 27, 1919-Nov. 17, 2009
Edith Erene Dodson, a resident of Boring, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, at her home. She was 90.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Sandy Funeral Home, 39551 Pleasant St., Sandy. Private burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham.
Edith was born May 27, 1919, in Boring to Eric and Ida (Andersen) Nordin. She attended Cottrell Grade School and Sandy High School. After graduating high school, she attended a business college in Portland.
In 1939, she married William Dodson. They later divorced.
Edith raised her son in Boring and worked at the Oregon Bulb Farm as a bookkeeper for 46 years. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, feeding and watching the birds and taking care of her home.
Survivors include her son, Ted Dodson of Gresham; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Adventist Hospice, 5835 N.E. 122nd Ave., Suite 135, Portland, 97230-1085.
