Wilbur R. Davis
March 6, 1929 — Nov. 21, 2009
Gresham resident Wilbur R. Davis died Saturday, Nov. 21. He was 80.
A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Nov. 27, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 N.E. Roberts Ave. Memorial services will follow at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Home Community Church, 32120 S.E. Dodge Park Blvd., Gresham. Private committal will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Wilbur was born March 6, 1929, in Columbia City, to Russell and Ruby (Straus) Davis. He was raised and educated in Warrenton, where he graduated from high school in 1948.
He joined the Air Force in 1950 and served during the Korean War. Wilbur was honorably discharged in 1954.
He married Alvena Brock on March 8, 1952, in Roswell, N.M. The family lived in Fort Worth, Texas, until moving to Oregon in 1955.
Wilbur worked as a dispensing optician for Columbia Optical off and on from 1959. He retired in 1995, but continued to work part-time for Advantage Optical until fully retiring Oct. 28, 2009.
Wilbur’s passion for the ministry led him to attend Multnomah School of the Bible for two years. He then pastored three churches over the course of 30 years. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church from 1958 to 1965 and served as a deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher. He was an active member of Allen Avenue Baptist Church in Beaverton and Pleasant Home Community Church, were he was also a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, watching movies, sports and tinkering with cars.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Survivors include his wife of Gresham; daughter, Marcy Coleman of Sandy; son, Gary Davis of Gresham; brothers, Bob Davis and Richard Davis Sr., both of Gearhart; sisters, Ann Maize of Warrenton and Bonnie Johnson of Long Beach, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Multnomah School of the Bible.
Gresham Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Joan Marie Bennette
June 13, 1939 — Nov. 14, 2009
East County resident Joan Marie Bennette, 70, died Saturday, Nov. 14, with her family gathered around her.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Central Bible Church, 8815 N.E. Glisan St., Portland.
Joan was born June 13, 1939, in McMinnville. She was the first of three daughters for John and Lucille Hight. Her childhood years were busy with school activities and picking berries and beans in local fields. She graduated from McMinnville High School in 1958 and went on to complete a one-year course of study at a Portland college to train beauticians.
She dated Jerry Bennette for more than five years. On Nov. 27, 1959, the couple was married and lived in Monmouth before moving to East County.
Joan was an active member of Central Bible Church. She enjoyed helping others and coordinated wedding, anniversary and funeral receptions for church members for many years. Joan loved to sew and had fashioned quilts for each of her great-grandchildren, completing the last one just a week before her death. She also had a passion for family history, tracing her ancestral lines back through the Oregon Trail, Revolutionary War and early arrivals from Europe.
