ADVERTISEMENTS
Rep. Nick Kahl, D-Rockwood, has announced he will run for a second two-year term in the Oregon House of Representatives.
He will hold an event to kick-off his re-election campaign at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Joe Edgar Union Hall, 1850 N.E. 162nd Ave., Portland. Scheduled guests at the event include Oregon Attorney General John Kroger and House Speaker Dave Hunt.
Republican Matt Wand, 32, a Gresham attorney and Troutdale city councilor, announced in early November he would challenge Kahl for the District 49 seat in the May 2010 primary election.
Kahl, who defeated Republican John Nelsen in the fall 2008 election, said he looks forward to continuing his grassroots approach to addressing East County’s needs.
“My first term in the Legislature has seen our beloved Oregon faced with some of the most difficult economic challenges in its history,” the Rockwood native said. “But by working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and applying the strong work ethic and people-first ideals I have learned growing up in our proud district, I have met them and have delivered on my promise to fight to make sure East County gets its fair share.”
Kahl was one of the "representatives" (hollow laugh)
who thought it was a good idea to raise taxes on an already strapped public.
We don't need his brand of 'help'.

In response to the comment regarding tax increases:
I'm assuming that you are referencing the proposed Measures 66 & 67 in the upcoming election, and since you are adverse to the tax "increase" I'll assume you make more than $250,000 (household) or $125,000 (individually) per year.
Citing that the proposed tax increases will affect "cash strapped" citizens is both fallacious, disingenuous, and misguided. Our citizens making less than $250,000 per household will see 0% increase, and if they make more than that its a temporary increase of 1.8% over $250,000. Individuals who make less than $125,000 per year will see 0% increases, while those who make more will temporarily (until 2012) pay an extra 1.8% over $125,000. Oh, and if you become unemployed your taxes will actually be reduced, and you will not be taxed on the first $2400 of your unemployment benefits. In essence, this will actually help our "cash strapped" neighbors.
If one takes a serious & empathetic look at the department reductions in education, health/social services, and social protections, it becomes crucial for Oregonians to step up. Services such as breast and cervical cancer treatment for uninsured women are on the line along with hundreds more.
Those citizens who rely on ignorance and perhaps fear mongering might want to take a serious look at why they are adverse. Personally, I'd love to sit down with my neighbor to have coffee and discuss the matter...the fact stands that this socially responsible tax increase which only affects our most well to do citizens will have significant impact for our society.
Our leadership in Salem is commissioned to balance the budget, and that is exactly what they did. They took the high ground and faced serious issues head on without putting their heads in the sand. As it stands, there are two budgets, one maintaining services (if Measures 66/67 pass), and one cutting services with a meat cleaver (should Measures 66/67 fail).
Lastly, Nick has done a tremendous job during his first term, and I sincerely applaud him for his efforts and successes.

Hey RL, it's interesting that your written words mimic Kahl's rhetoric precisely.
As for 0% increase in in taxes for those making under $250,000, are you forgetting that may also mean 0% job & 0% paycheck when they get laid off? At least you mention that unemployment will get a tax break so OBVIOUSLY you expect it to happen!!! I also think their unemployment will not last as long as your new taxes (2012). Even so, when will business's struggling or going under from your new tax be able to hire again, if ever?
As far as the education & health needs of citizens, perhaps you should do more to assure that actually ARE citizens! Our temporary welfare services are supposed to be for USA citizens with a legitimate Social Security card that matches their name. How about the super high % of subsidized school lunches? Mom's doing house cleaning at a reduced rate & dad's doing lawn maintenance for minimum wage. Guess where they are from & guess how much (if any) they paid into a safety system or education system the Oregon citizens have been paying into their entire lives.

I was referring to the license and vehicle registration increases (along with other increases) in fees. This was called a 'Transportation Package' in a breathtaking campaign of self-aggrandizing publicity in the form of letters to editors by some of our 'representatives' after the deed was done.
The tax increases were the only solution the Democrats could come up with.
That is not "socially responsible."
It's stealing.
