ADVERTISEMENTS
A baby bed that was found responsible for the deaths of two babies, including a 5-month-old Gresham resident, is being recalled.
Amby Baby USA of Minneapolis, Minn., is recalling around 24,000 Amby Baby Motion Beds, which are marketed for fussy babies. The bed consists of a mesh fabric hammock that is connected by a large spring and metal crossbar to a steel frame. The bed is identified by the label, “Amby — Babies Love It. Naturally!”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission found that the side-to-side shifting or tilting of the hammock can cause an infant to roll and get trapped or wedged against the hammock’s mattress pad or fabric, possibly suffocating them.
Amby Baby USA has acknowledged that two infants suffocated to death while using the hammock, including a 5-month-old Gresham infant in August. A 4-month-old girl in Lawrenceville, Ga., died in June.
The bed, which was manufactured in China, was sold at AmbyBaby.com and other Internet retailers from January 2003 to October 2009 for around $250. Consumers who have the Amby bed should immediately stop using it and contact Amby Baby USA for a free repair kit by visiting AmbyBaby.com or by calling 1-866-544-9721 weekdays between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The safety commission is encouraging other people who may have been affected by the product to visit cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx or call 1-800-638-2772 to report the incident.
