Richard Sherman Lewis Sr.

Former East County resident Richard Sherman Lewis Sr., 58, died Friday, Jan. 15, of abdominal cancer at Kaiser Permanente in Clackamas.
A memorial and celebration of his life will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan 30, at Learning Tree School, 4400 S.W. 11th St., Gresham.
Richard was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Portland to Frank and Belva (Helder) Lewis. He graduated from Centennial High School and attended Mt. Hood Community College.
On Oct. 3, 1970, he married Deborah Todd at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Gresham.
Richard worked for Curtis RV. He also worked for School Bus Services and Western Bus Sales from 1977 to 1999.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Rhonda Rathjen of Sandy and Christine Lewis of Portland; sons, Ric Lewis of Estacada and Keith Davis of Palm Coast, Fla.; mother, Belva Lewis of Gresham; sister, Kathleen Seidel of Gresham; and five grandchildren.

Elmer “Pete” Staton

Gresham resident Elmer “Pete” Staton, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 16.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 21, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home.
Pete was born Jan. 13, 1915, in Rockwall County, Texas, to George and Myrtle (Cannon) Staton. He lived in Texas until moving to Exeter, Calif., in 1936. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Oregon at the Oregon Caves.
On July 26, 1937, he married Hazel White in Santa Rosa, Calif., in a double wedding with his brother, George, who married Hazel’s sister.
Pete worked as a meter reader for the city of Exeter. He also worked in the fruit packing business for many years. He moved to Redlands, Calif., in 1956 and worked as a custodian at Calimesa Elementary School. He moved to Gresham in 1977 and worked as a custodian at Warner Pacific College in Portland.
Pete was a member of Lynchwood Church of God. He enjoyed carpentry and gardening, especially with roses and vegetables.
His wife, Hazel, preceded him in death in 2009.
Survivors include his daughters, Lenora Watson of Portland and Sandra Bos of Gresham; brother, Jack Staton of Gold Hill; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Albert “Bert” Sperling

Gresham resident Albert “Bert” Sperling, 69, died Thursday, Jan. 21, in Portland.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at St. Henry Catholic Church, 346 N.W. First St. A committal service will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Bert was born Aug. 20, 1940, in Langdon, N.D., to Albert and Emma (Olson) Sperling. When Bert was 7 years old, the family moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He then attended North Dakota State University and received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1962.
Bert met Patricia McNamee in 1958 while attending college, and in 1962, they were married in Hillsboro, N.D. They moved to Portland after their marriage.
Bert worked as a pharmacist for Fred Meyer, Kaiser and Rockwood Rexall. In 1976, he and Patricia purchased Hood View Pharmacy, which they owned and operated for 25 years. They purchased Powell Valley Pharmacy, closing Hood View. They continued with Powell Valley Pharmacy until 2006.
Bert was a member of the Oregon State Pharmaceutical Association and the Oregon Society of Consultant Pharmacists. He loved to play all sports and was playing basketball at the age of 50.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles in 1981 and Eugene in 2007.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Daniel Sperling of Newberg, Mark Sperling of Gresham and Michael Sperling of Tigard; daughter, Robyn Sperling of Tigard; sister, Delores Morton of San Jose, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Tammara “Tami” LeAnn Workes

Sherwood resident Tammara “Tami” LeAnn Workes, 52, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, at her home.
No services will be held.
Tami was born Dec. 10, 1957, in Portland to David and Janice Eggers.
On April 17, 1982, she married Jerry Workes in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Tami worked as an office manager for a chiropractic clinic in Gresham. She enjoyed garage sales, spending time with her family, singing, camping and riding her WaveRunner.
Survivors include her husband; son, Austin Workes of Sherwood; daughter, Jill Howell of Gresham; parents, Jan and Frank Lamb of Payette, Idaho; sister, Debbie Starcher of Lubbock, Texas; dog Duke; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Tami Works Foundation through Wells Fargo Bank.

LoVonne “Lonnie” Hager

Gresham resident LoVonne “Lonnie” Hager, 74, died Friday, Jan. 22, in Portland.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.
Lonnie was born April 4, 1935, in Ryder, N.D., to Christ and Rosina (Schnhible) Morlang.
On Sept. 24, 1951, she married Oliver Hager in Benedict, N.D., on the family farm. They moved to Oregon in 1952.
Lonnie was a farmer. Her other business endeavors included working retail sales at Sears, Roebuck & Co. and owning the Goose Creek Nursery in Eagle Creek and Estacada Appliance.
Lonnie’s interests included dancing, crocheting and spending time with her family. She moved to Eagle Creek in 1961 and to Gresham in 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver, in 2009; and by her daughter, Sandy Clark.
Survivors include her sons, Rick Hager of Eagle Creek and Roger Hager of Gresham; sisters, Wilma Hinton of Vancouver, Wash., and Jeri Handle of South Dakota; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hubert James Johnson
June 29, 1922-Jan. 24, 2010
Gresham resident Hubert James Johnson, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 24, in a Portland care center.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Sandy Funeral Home, 39551 Pleasant St., Sandy. Private burial will be at Firhill Memorial Cemetery in Sandy.
Hubert was born June 29, 1922, in Clarkston, Wash., to Jack and Viola (Clark) Johnson. When he was 14 years old, his family moved to Clark County where he continued his education. Hubert served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Merchant Marines and then in the Navy from 1942 until his discharge in 1945.
On March 6, 1945, he married Maxine McManus in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Vancouver before moving to Oregon, where they lived in Parkrose and Sandy before settling in Gresham.
Hubert worked in logging and as a log truck driver and also as a truck driver for Bowers Trucking and Southern Pacific Motor Trucking. He retired in 1982.
Hubert was a member of the Vancouver Moose Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Brenda Boitano of Vancouver; sisters, Wanda Swanson of Chehalis, Wash., Cathy Johnson of Battle Ground, Wash., Mildred Munn of Vancouver and Mary Loomis of Vancouver; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mary F. Ruttle

Gresham resident Mary F. Ruttle, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Viewing hours will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.
Mary was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to George and Mabel (Nichols) Ferns. Mary graduated from Battle Ground High School in Battle Ground, Wash., in 1946.
On March 3, 1950, she married Jim Ruttle in Vancouver, Wash. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mary worked for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. in Vancouver. She later worked as a school secretary in the Rockwood School District for several years. Finally, she worked as an administrative assistant at the Perry Center for Children for 20 years.
