H. Albert “Al” Gantenbein
Jan. 21, 1916-March 3, 2010
Former Gresham resident H. Albert “Al” Gantenbein, 94, died Wednesday, March 3, in Hillsboro.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, at Gateway Baptist Church, 13300 N.E. San Rafael St., Portland.
Al was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Seattle to Herman and Allie Gantenbein. He graduated from West Seattle High School.
On April 12, 1941, he married Lola Myers in Grants Pass.
Al started in the grocery business at age 14 and worked in the industry for 37 years. He later worked as a commercial real estate broker for 10 years, selling grocery stores. He lived in Kelso from 1947 to 1967, in Sandy from 1967 to 1969, in Gresham from 1969 to 1999 and in Hillsboro since 1999.
Al was a lifelong church member and enjoyed directing choirs, teaching Sunday school and assisting in church ministries. He participated in YMCA programs all of his life. Al served as an ombudsman for the state of Oregon in inspecting local foster homes. He was a tutor in the HOSTS and SMART programs, and he volunteered at the Cannon Beach Conference Center.
Al’s many interests and hobbies included cake decorating, woodworking, upholstering, singing, model railroads, traveling and entertaining his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife on March 14, 2001; and by his sister, Dorothy Powell.
Survivors include his daughters, Judy Floyd of Longview, Wash., Sue Osborne of Hillsboro and Sandra Snider of Aloha; brothers, Don Gantenbein of Barstow, Calif., and James Gantenbein of Eugene; sister, Betty Rich of Tacoma, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
