When Multnomah County Library’s Troutdale branch opens this summer at Cherry Park Marketplace, don’t expect the stereotypical stodgy atmosphere where a stern-faced librarian hushes patrons for the slightest murmur.
Although the 6,000-square-foot facility will certainly provide a quiet place to read and study, branch Manager Bryan Fearn envisions it offering much more.
“Libraries certainly have changed,” he says, noting the ubiquitous influence of computers and the Internet. “Now it’s more of a place where people can gather, share and exchange ideas.”
Fearn, 35, joined Multnomah County Library earlier this year to spearhead the opening of the Troutdale library at Southeast 242nd Drive and Cherry Park Road.
Wiring and renovations are under way at the storefront space. An official opening date has yet to be set, but Fearn and county library officials expect the facility to be up and running by early summer.
“Provided there’s no hiccups, that’s the target,” Fearn said. “We’ll have more of a firm date in the next few weeks as construction gets further along.”
