Federal grant helps county reduce home hazards

ADVERTISEMENTS

A three-year, $874,898 federal grant will help fund a new Multnomah County housing inspection program.

The federal Housing and Urban Development Healthy Homes demonstration grant will fund the county Health Department’s Community Asthma Inspection and Referral project.

Multnomah County is one of 25 organizations nationwide to win more than $13 million through the HUD grants.

The grant will help the county’s environmental health staff to identify sources of illness and hazards in homes, including allergens, asthma and respiratory illnesses, mold, combustion products, pests, lead sources, radon, pesticide residues and safety issues.

An environmental health specialist, nurse and outreach workers will work with the families, landlords and medical providers to reduce the hazards.
