A group of 31 young adults made a stop in Portland along their 3,835-mile trip from Virginia Beach, Va., to Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast, pausing long enough to help Habitat for Humanity in the construction of a home in the 6300 block of Southeast 97th Avenue.
The group was fortunate enough to spend the night at Trinity Lutheran Church while helping the organization in the construction of the home.
Bike & Build, an independent nonprofit organization raising money for affordable housing organizations, started the trip Wednesday, May 19. They’ll finish Saturday, July 31, making several stops along the way to help Habitat for Humanity and Rebuild Together as they construct homes throughout America.
“We have 10 building days along the way,” said Aileen Strickland, a route leader.
Portland is a stop on the central route for Bike & Build, which is one of eight through the country.
“They’ve come through Portland for a while, but we’re usually not on a build day,” said Sarah Armstrong, Habitat for Humanity volunteer coordinator.
