Centennial had its chances early in the game, but couldn’t cash in during a 30-12 loss against Clackamas to open the season Friday, Aug. 31.

The Eagles drove to the Cavaliers’ 3-yard-line on its opening drive only to come up empty on a missed field goal. Two more Centennial scoring chances disappeared due to turnovers, as Clackamas built a 23-0 lead by halftime.

“We got into the red zone three times early on and didn’t get any points,” Eagles’ receiver Drew Fisher said. “If we score on those chances, who knows how this one would have turned out.”

The Cavaliers gained control of the game in the second quarter when linebacker Jack Goodwin intercepted a pass to end a Centennial scoring threat inside the 10-yard line. Clackamas made the most of the turnover, driving 92 yards behind the solid passing of quarterback Ryan Cook. He completed the drive with a 9-yard scoring strike to Ben Adler to give the Cavs a 20-0 second-quarter lead.

The Eagles broke up the shutout bid early in the fourth quarter after Ben Eiden broke loose for a 67-yard kickoff return before being shoved out of bounds. Centennial scored eight plays later when quarterback Kyle Warner surged over the goal-line from a yard out.

• In other Mount Hood action, Barlow fended off some late scoring threats from visiting Oregon City on Friday, Aug. 31, to survive 21-14. The Bruins received a monster performance from junior tailback Malcolm Johnson, who delivered 218 rushing yards on 35 carries. Johnson also scored two touchdowns and picked off two passes.

Sandy defeated Newberg 37-18. Receiver Blake Bithell led the charge with seven catches for 72 yards. He put the game out of reach with a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Teammate Traven Lutz gained 91 yards rushing on only seven carries.
