Josh Cameron has been through his share of soccer tryouts, whether it was kicking balls through the grass in middle school or dribbling through cones in college. Now, the 22-year-old is trying to prove himself all over again – this time at one of the sports’ highest levels.
His first test came in January where he competed at an invitation-only showcase held by the Portland Timbers. The day started with seven-on-seven mini-games where players subbed themselves into the game for a chance to display their skills.
“When I was younger these big tryouts always terrified me, and I never did very well at them,” Cameron said. “This time I didn’t know many guys on my team, and it was hard to find a comfort zone. I was probably over-thinking things and it didn’t go well.”
Luckily for Cameron, the day featured an afternoon session with a full-game scrimmage. And Timbers’ head coach Gavin Wilkinson was overseeing the action.
“I found my pace and was able to whip some crosses in there, and I actually scored a goal,” Cameron said. “I guess I realized that this was it – I may only get one chance and my play rose up under the pressure.”
When the day was finished assistant coach Amos Magee pulled him aside and asked to talk with him further. He ended up being one of two players signed by the team – 150 attended the tryout.
